Michelin has decided to apply the European regulation on imported deforestation (EUDR) in 2025 as initially planned
On Tuesday 17 December 2024, the European Parliament ratified the one-year postponement in the application of the European regulation on imported deforestation (EUDR), which was due to become effective early 2025.
However, Michelin has decided to apply this European regulation as initially planned, starting January 2025, to all-naturalrubber used in its tires and products, not only in Europe but worldwide.
Over the last 18 months, the Group has developed the tools and processes needed to be compliant with the new regulation to guarantee and monitor a sustainable and virtuous natural rubber supply chain, further strengthening a public commitment made in 2015 to source only deforestation-free natural rubber.
A considerable challenge, given the complexity of this regulation and the organization of the global rubber value chain.
The solutions implemented include:
- Geolocation and satellite imagery analysis of millions of plots, to demonstrate the absence of deforestation before natural rubber is made available on the market.
- Verification of compliance with environmental and human rights legislation in production countries.
As a founding member of the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR), the Group actively supports all initiatives aimed at promoting a fair and eco-responsible rubber industry.
